Important Tips For Walking With Dogs In Cornwall
Walking the coast path is a joy, but it requires respect for the landscape. Safety and preparation ensure that both you and your dog have a great day out without any mishaps.
1. Pack Essentials And Stay Hydrated
The coastal path can be strenuous, and there are limited freshwater streams safe for drinking.
Water: Always carry a collapsible bowl and more water than you think you need.
Gear: Bring a towel for muddy paws and a spare lead.
First Aid:Â A basic kit with tick removers and antiseptic spray is a smart addition to your backpack.
Shop: Forgotten something? The Treveague Campsite shop stocks various essentials and treats for your four-legged friends.
2. Watch For Livestock And Cliff Edges
Cliff Safety:Â Please keep dogs on leads near cliff edges. Even well-trained dogs can be distracted by birds or rabbits.
Livestock: You will likely encounter cattle or sheep on the coast path. Always keep your dog on a lead around livestock. If cattle chase you, let the dog off the lead so you can both reach safety separately—but this is rare if you keep your distance.
Navigation: Maps and local advice are available at our reception to help you stick to the safe trails.
Seasonal Dog Restrictions And Lead Rules
Cornwall loves dogs, but some restrictions apply during peak season to keep beaches clean and safe for families.
Area | Restriction |
Gorran Haven Beach | Dogs on leads only (Easter to 30th Sept). |
Vault Beach | Dog-friendly year-round (No restrictions). |
Hemmick Beach | Dog-friendly year-round (No restrictions). |
National Trust Land | Dogs usually welcome, but must be on leads around livestock. |

Are Gorran Haven Beaches Dog Friendly?

This is the most common question we get! Yes, Gorran Haven is very dog-friendly.
The main village beach allows dogs all year round. However, between Easter and September 30th, dogs must be kept on a lead. This allows families to picnic safely while you can still enjoy a morning or evening stroll by the water.
If you want your dog to run free off-lead during peak summer days, simply walk 15 minutes south to Vault Beach or Hemmick Beach, both of which have zero restrictions.
Beach | Dog Policy | Facilities | Notes |
Gorran Haven | Leads only (Easter-Sept) | Toilets, Café, Shop | Safe, sandy, sheltered. |
Vault Beach | Allowed year-round | None | Shingle/Sand. Steep path access. |
Hemmick Beach | Allowed year-round | None | Remote and beautiful. |
Porthluney | Allowed year-round | Seasonal Café, Toilets | majestic castle backdrop. |
Safety And Seasonal Restrictions On The South Cornwall Coast
The coast changes with the seasons. Before you head out:
Check the Tides:Â Some coves can get cut off at high tide. Always check tide tables at reception or online.
Weather: Coastal winds can be strong. Avoid cliff paths during storms or high winds.
Wildlife Hazards:Â In summer, be aware of Adders (snakes) close to the paths and long grass. Seek vet attention immediately if your dog is bitten.
Emergency: In a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Ask the team:Â Treveague Campsite staff are locals. We can tell you which paths are muddy, where the livestock were seen last, and the best time to head out.
